What are Backlinks?

Backlinks, also known as inbound links and incoming links, are a type of off-page SEO in which you obtain links from other websites that direct visitors to your own. The person who receives the link refers to a link as a backlink.

Backlinks differ from outbound links (links from your website to another website) and internal links (links from your website to another website) (links from one page on your website to another). A good inbound link comes from a reputable website and employs natural anchor text. The text copy that is hyperlinked is known as anchor text. If I link to our blog post about backlink strategies, the anchor text will be backlink strategies.

Natural anchor text implies that you are not simply hyperlinking keywords left and right. Because Google understands link context, more generic learn more and click here anchor text can be just as valuable as keyword-optimised anchor text.

Link Building Strategies

1. Maintain a steady blog with great content

One of the most tried and true methods for organically generating inbound links is to consistently create great blog content that people naturally want to link to. You should publish content that is relevant to your industry and beneficial to your reader. They will feel compelled to share it this way. They may even include a link to it on their own website if they have one.

With our free guide and checklist, you can learn how to start a successful blog.

2. Link to other blogs on your blog

A blog is intended to be a social tool. The more you link to others, especially in a consistent and opportunity-driven manner, the more likely it is that one of those bloggers will return the favour.

Plus, you can’t cover everything on your blog. It makes sense to use the internet’s wealth of resources to improve and reward your readers’ blog experiences.

3. Write guest blog posts

Create an excellent blog post and distribute it to blogs that would be a good fit for it. If they agree, they should be willing to provide you with an inbound link in the post. Guest blogging is an excellent way to promote your expertise while also earning quality white-hat links.

Most news organisations allow people to submit original articles on topics of interest to their readers. However, you should begin with publications that are directly related to your niche. If you are a branding agency, you should contact branding publications.

4. Curate and publish helpful resource lists

Resource lists are excellent link bait as well as useful content for your readers. If you create a comprehensive resource list, it’ll be easy for other bloggers to link to it in their own posts instead of rehashing and curating all that content themselves.

5. Do expert roundups to build relationships

Expert roundups can be a powerful tool for connecting with influencers. While these roundups may not get you a lot of inbound links or leads right away, building relationships with influencers will help you get solid backlinks from authoritative sources down the line.

After they contribute to your roundup, you can reach out to them later to ask about a guest post opportunity or something else while thanking them again for contributing to the previous expert roundup.

In one of our expert roundups, we reached out to successful marketers and asked them to share their top content marketing tips.

6. Create case studies about your most impressive clients

You can bet your clients will link to your site if you make them look good in case studies about their business. But you must make them good. This entails selecting companies that have achieved the best results, are enthusiastic, and are well-versed in your product or service.

It also entails asking the right questions and presenting the case study in an appealing, comprehensive manner.

7. Administer surveys

If you conduct research, make a commitment to share the results with others. If you collect and crunch the data and then give some high authority sites access to the results, you can bet they’ll do some promotion and inbound linking for you to ensure you have a large sample size.

8. Do some outreach when you have big news or a great piece of content

Getting press attention and being published in industry publications can help you build your brand, increase your visible expertise, boost your credibility, and, of course, gain backlinks from authoritative sources.

To begin, create a dedicated page about the story on your website to which they can link. Then, contact a few journalists and/or publications that you believe would be interested in your story. Make sure to provide context for your request, follow their rules, create a compelling subject line for your pitch email, and be helpful rather than boastful.

9. Identify broken links through site-crawling tools

As with the previous step, some webmasters may link to your site but use outdated or broken links. This is normal as you change and update your website. These inbound links, however, are still valuable and can be updated.

Scan other websites for broken links using tools such as Dead Link Checker, Link Juice Recovery Tool, and Screaming Frog. Then, using the template above as a guide, contact webmasters with a correct link as a replacement.

10. Do some co-marketing

You can also take things a step further by forming co-marketing alliances. Collaboration with another company to promote a piece of content or a product, followed by sharing the results of that promotion. You’ll get more links and buzz with less effort if you leverage a partner’s relationship and reach.

Co-marketing does not have to be difficult or expensive to be effective. You can approach a similar-sized brand in another industry and pitch them on the project. You can start with a few tweets and work your way up to developing marketing collateral.

11. Search for and monitor your competitors’ backlinks

Look for opportunities to obtain similar links. This is a great way to quickly find high-value link opportunities. Conduct competitor research on a weekly or monthly basis to identify new opportunities that can be capitalized on while they are still fresh.

To obtain a list of backlinks for one of your competitors, use a link analysis tool such as Ahrefs, Majestic, or Moz’s Link Explorer. Then, investigate which types of posts are gaining backlinks and benefiting from off-page SEO.

For example, if one of your competitors is writing guest posts for specific publications, those publications are likely to be interested in guest posts from you on similar topics.
